Inlays are restorations that are custom-crafted to fit into the grooves between a tooth’s cusps—the raised points on the chewing surface. They are typically used when decay is confined to the central portion of the tooth and do not extend to the cusps. When the damage or decay affects the cusps as well, an onlay is often the preferred treatment. Onlays extend over the cusps, providing additional coverage and protection against further damage.
